At Fairways Primary we offer all major sporting disciplines, depending on the seasons. Our belief is that all learners should be encouraged to participate in at least one sport or cultural activity for the school. It is also our mission to offer sport to all levels of competence and therefore we do try to give all learners a chance to play in a team or participate. Our A teams are often entered into a strong league in order to challenge them to achieve better.
Our sports department is comprised of our Sports Co-Ordinator, Mr Sibusiso Gasa who has been in this position since the beginning of 2014, ably assisted by a group of qualified teachers and coaches. All teachers and coaches have undergone courses for their particular disciplines to keep them up to speed. Sport is played on a term basis. 1st Term sports include swimming, tennis and cricket, 2nd Term sports are soccer, netball and tennis, 3rd Term sport is mainly athletics and tennis, and 4th Term sports include cricket, swimming and tennis
Parents’ Sporting Association
The Parents Sporting Association was a new initiative developed. This association allows parents to voice their concerns and opinions of sport at Fairways, as well as allows them to assist where necessary. Parents are welcome to join and help in making Fairways the top sporting school, however do be warned that as easy as it looks from the outside running and coaching sport at Fairways is not easy. The parents that are assisting now are Mr. Fleming who coaches and trains the swimming team, waking up and being at the school by 6:45am to coach the team, Mrs. Favini who trains the girls on the netball courts. This is a great initiative and if any parents would like to be part of the association please send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org
Special Outings and Fixtures
Due to Fairways close proximity to Wanderers Cricket Stadium, we are often invited to participate in special functions for the learners. It is usually the KFC Mini Cricket Players that get to go. They have played matches on the main field during lunch break in a match between South Africa and Australia, had a personal signing session with the Highveld Lions, and got to train with the Highveld Lions. We are really grateful to Wanderer’s management for organising these occasions as we know how much it means to these little players. We have also had the Highveld Lions come to Fairways and coach the boys in the afternoons, Ethan O’Reilly, Garrnet Kruger and Vaughn Van Jaarsveld have been great inspirations for the boys.
